The one

This is something I normally don’t write about. The first reason is because it’s hard for me to write about stuff like this, also I don’t like to talk about my feelings online much, since I have trouble telling them apart either way, but I think I’m pretty certain now. I think I found the one.

I met them a couple of weeks ago. I was trying to get something and I saw them. They looked at me and I had to get to know them better. It was love at first sight. You know that feeling when you see something and you know it’s going to click, even if you don’t know them at all? Well, that’s how I felt.

It felt like cheating at first. I thought I already found the one, but then I saw this one and was smitten. I had heard about this one for ages, but never thought I would fall for it.

I’m talking about the Miyoo mini plus. I get the hype now.

I originally bought the RG35XX from Anbernic to just have. A vanity buy. I played it more than my other retro handhelds though. When I wanted to buy a second one, just so I had a spare, I saw the Miyoo Mini plus and I had to try it. Also: it was cheaper than the RG35XX by a lot, so even the buy in was cheaper.

I loved the button presses on the RG35XX, but with the miyoo mini plus it’s just smoother, I feel, also an added plus is that they replicated the backfeel of the OG gameboy (the dmg), which I have so much hours into and it instantly feels good in my hands. Also the weight of the thing is perfect.

I never made a theme for a retro handheld before, just because I was happy with the one I had and it seemed daunting to me, but something about the miyoo mini plus wanted me to customize it, so I did. I combined 3 existing skins and made it my own. It’s not perfect by any means, but it’s mine.

Have been enjoying gaming on it so much. It’s by my side all the time, for when I want to pick up and play. Also, why haven’t I tried OnionOS or GarlicOS (which could have gone on the RG35XX) before. It has this handy instant game feature, after which you press the menu button you can pick up a savestate from another game you are playing, or when you shut the device down while playing a game, it loads back up playing that game, at the spot you were at. This feature alone has helped me put in a large chunk into Mario & Luigi: superstar saga, which I am finally attempting to finish.

Another thing I have never done is bother with shaders, maybe something subconciously made me feel that the device I was playing on wasn’t my permanent daily driver, but I set up shaders and bezels for my MM+ that makes it look like the old consoles of back in the day, and it helps with the immersion. I can not express how much I love this thing without it being a gushfest, but I hope I made the point clear.

The miyoo mini plus will be my daily driver from now on for most retro games that I want to play, as it feels nice, has a great size to take everywhere, has a great screen, great buttons,…
