Review: Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag: Resynced
Confession time: I never played the original Black Flag. I know, I should have, but life intervened when it released, so I am playing it now. We friends again?
I am currently going through it on xbox series x and I must say that I am enjoying it. Most people will think I am nuts when I say this but I hate the ship combat. Don’t like it. Don’t know why. I just fast travel when I can. Am I skipping over important parts of the game? In my opinion: no. Most of the story plays out on land anyway, so sailing can be reduced to its minimum (in my humble opinion).
I love the story though, I love how he starts out not connected to the assassin order but stops a rogue assassin and takes his identity at first (minor spoiler). I love that he isn’t born into an assassin family but is the first of his line, becoming one by accident really.
Resynced makes for a near perfect remake, taking parts of modern assassin’s creeds that just work, mixing them with old black flag to create a good mix of old and new. It follows the same storybeats as the old assassin’s creed game, but mixes in new enhancements (like the from what I heard irritating modern storyline is gone), to replace it with the animus hub that we got in AC Shadows. I love how they added the modern touches so gamers like myself that never played the original, but are fond of the modern enhancements in the AC titles, can just pick up and play as if we are playing a newer title, so it’s not just a new coat of paint, but a whole new rework of the old plus the new.
Although I am thoroughly enjoying Resynced, there are a few glitches and bugs that I have come accross, nothing game breaking, but more funny, so I hope that with a few patches or updates that these can be smoothed over, not that they really ruin the experience but they do take you out of the immersion a little.
I don’t know where I fall on the Assassin’s fanbase regarding this title. I like the story so far (still need to finish it). I like the setting, I like the characters and some of the new ones they brought in (“I’m holding the gun, papa” if you know, you know). My all time favourite is the first one and Odyssey, so I’m curious to see if this will bypass any of those, but i’m having a good time regardless.
If you are a fan of the series and you have played Black Flag before, I can say that you will enjoy the new things that are added and if you have never experienced
