When I talk about Raspberry pi, I don’t mean the delicious treat, but I talk about the mini-computers, that in it’s relative short lifespan have conquered the heart of makers and programmers everywhere.
Thanks to the initiative of Eben Upton, we now have this lowcost single-board-computer, with which we can thinker and solder and program, all to our hearts content. In it’s short history, already there are different versions. We have the model Alpha (A) which was used as a proof of concept, both to see if the hardware would work and to see if there was a market for a single-board-computer to teach programming and thinker with.
Later came model B. Model B béta-versions were first auctioned off on Ebay before the major launch of the B version, which was planned for February 2012. The first wave of Pi Model B’s that hit the market were 10 000 units. Thanks to faults in the manufacturing in Asia (because of faster manufacturing they chose asia, because they wanted to ship this unit fast, now Pi’s are only produced in the UK).
Model A first had 128 mb ram at launch, which after the launch of the model B was upgraded to 256 megabytes to make the 2 models practically identical.
10 000 units were produced of the model B, while the market for it, was much, much larger. More than 2 million orders were already placed in presale. On 16th of april 2012 the first customers received their raspberry pi.
Soon model B+ was introduced. A model that costs the same as the B but had more usb ports, more GPIO pins (40 instead of 26), a microsd slot (instead of standard SD).
Now we are already at Raspberry Pi 3. Also they expanded the range with first the Zero, which was introduced as a computer that costs 5 dollar, and which was first unavailable and was given with the official Raspberry Pi magazin, the magpi.
Now we have the Zero W, which has Wireless and Bluetooth on board (and still has the same size as the Zero. And only just a week ago the Zero WH was introduced, which has GPIO pin headers already soldered to it, so people who don’t like to solder can purchase that version.
