Review: Dead as disco
Music. it’s all around us. There is almost no escaping it, and yet, so little games are made where music is the focus. Where is the time of Guitar hero, Rockband, all those games. Where is the time when you busted out that floormat and showed that game how good you were at dancing. Singing? What about singing so even the neighbour’s cat didn’t know how to meow. Nowadays there are still games where you can sing and dance, but this one genre is under-represented. The music-beat-em-up.
Now we get Dead as Disco. Yes, It’s still in Early Access at the time of writing but… and it’s a big but, it’s already a well-polished game with content to keep your sweet tooth engaged for hours. What you get already is several bosses to fight. Want to rock out with a punk skeleton that challenges you to be a Maniac? Yes, you can do it here.
Want to get dj’ed to death while fighting off goons and other baddies? The game got that covered. Asian styles you don’t like and want to kick ass on? Yep, it’s here too.
What I like about the game is that it gives you an unlimited mode as well. In this mode you can complete challenges on tracks of your choosing, those that you picked up from fighting the bosses on their own turf, or… and this is the fun part: you have an endless mode where you can rip loose with your own tracks. In a few clicks you have set up your own track or you get an editor that lets you really customize your track so it plays really well and then you can start beating to the beat. I tested a few tracks as well and it was a really fun experience. I didn’t quite get them as well matched like the developers of the game, but the potential is there. For the few clicks it took me to add my own songs and get them playable was fun, but to get them really like in the other modes, it takes some work, but I bet there will be folks that will gladly guide you through it to get your songs to match.
I knew I wanted the game when I saw the trailer for it and started to hear about it online. I love creative indies and this is one of them. The style, the visuals. All are really fun to watch. The controls are smooth. The story at the time of writing is represented in the bossfights and don’t constitute much, but it’s there.
For an early access it’s already an enjoyable experience and i’m curious to see where they take it. I want more!
