DCC, yes, me too
If you have been here long enough, you know I love good books. I’m the only reader in my family and I just love reading. Any book that has some info that I might be curious about goes onto my long TBR backlog. Don’t let me cite numbers, but I’m covered for the next 28 years for books (if I don’t buy any new ones. Don’t look at me like that!)
I have seen Dungeon Crawler Carl pass by a couple of times before I decided to pick it up. I have to admit that I thought the title was lame. Now I know it fits. Now I don’t think it’s lame anymore. Bought the book and read it in a few days, which is abnormal for me to do with any book. I get sidetracked so much that a book takes me 2 weeks to a month at least. So, to my surprise (no, I wasn’t surprised), I picked up the other books in the series in rapid succession (as if I didn’t have enough books already!) I think I got an achievement for that.
ACHIEVEMENT: MORE BOOKS
ARE YOU CERTAIN YOU ARE GOING TO READ ALL OF THESE IN YOUR LIFETIME? IT’S YOUR MONEY ANYWAY. LOOK AT ALL THE OTHER ONES YOU ARE NEGLECTING BECAUSE YOU BOUGHT YET ANOTHER SET OF BOOKS. DEAD TREES ARE WEEPING OR YOUR DIGITAL FOOTPRINT JUST GOT BIGGER. ANYWAY MORE READING HALLUCINATIONS TO COME
REWARD: YOU ALREADY GOT THE BOOKS. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT
I was sad I didnt’ get a reward for it, but I got all the books in the series which I love. Ohh, I should have lead with this: There is a talking cat!
Yes! you read that right. There is a talking cat in there. The start of the story goes like this. Carl, our titular himbo, is relaxing on the couch and when he craves a cigarette he goes to the balcony to have one. He is catsitting on his girlfriend’s prized persian called Donut, winner of many ribbons and prizes, who due to some cat-thing jumps out of the window and onto the branches of a tree. Off course she starts meowing. Carl, in panic, because the cat is worth a fortune, goes outside to rescue the cat after trying to coax it back inside. Then the world goes to shit. Not literally. Donut would not approve. Earth is being mined for it’s resources and an intergalactic prize-show is started where crawlers have to survive in a dungeon. Our hero, carl, standing in the snow with only flip flops, which he quickly loses, and in his heart-spotted boxershort, goes into the dungeon and there our adventure begins. Yes, if you think this is a crazy beginning of a story, it is. I totally agree. That was my opinion when I started reading this series as well, but somehow, even though I thought it was crazy, I kept on reading.
I kept on turning pages to know what would happen because Matt Dinniman is a bastard. He gives you just enough backstory about the characters to gets you going and then drip feeds you information like you are some gerbil that is crushed for attention and food. The books are filled with references and outlandish humour and I would totally understand if that is not your thing, but give them a try.
The genre of the books is literary RPG, which means that you are reading a book about a game being played and the characters level up. I never tried this genre before, but… I might check out more in the future. If some others are as great as this one, I need my fix (yes, TBR, you will be read one day, but I need more books).
The Dungeon Crawler carl series is going to run for 10 books, now at time of writing 8 are published. If you don’t read them, then Mongo will be appaled. (you will get this reference when you are in book 2, I believe.)
Ohh yeah, there is a dungeon crawler carl ttrpg in the works at Renegade. I might enter the dungeon at some point.
