Disabled characters in RPG

Before it was cumbersome and a lot of calculating was needed to play a disabled character in an RPG. You had to face the question of how to adjust the stats without being ableist. One product by an innovative company brings the solution that was needed all these decades.

Evil hat, creators of Fate Core and Fate Accelarated amongst other products, have created, in my humble opinion, the most awesome product the RPG community has seen in ages.

The Fate Accessibility toolkit gives disabled players the opportunity to finally play a version of themselves in their beloved RPG setting.

The product is released as a prototype at the moment and those that buy the prototype will get the full-art version for free when it is being released. This innovative way of releasing a product helps with releasing products that otherwise would not see the light of day. This also helps to get the product in the hands of the customer as soon as possible and see if the project is viable. I love this model, as it shows Evil Hat’s creativity and how much they love their Fate community.

The accessibility toolkit was created by disabled people themselves. Under the crede: “nothing about us, without us”. I asked for a review copy to see how well disability was handled in the project and I have actually nothing to complain about; Everything is handled sensitively. The choice of Person-first is explained, and why it should be handled. How to have a disabled person and character at your table is handled and even how to play a disabled character if you are not disabled. Also the villain tropes, of which disabled people are so often portrayed are handled and there is a section on how not to do it.

There really isn’t anything I can add that would be negative about the project. I love that disabled people finally get the love of the rpg community that they deserve and applaud Evil Hat for supporting our community.

Springhole has helped me create good characters and keep out of the standard traps.
